Paper as we know it was invented by the Chinese in 105 A.D.  The ancient papermaking process involved mixing a number of fibrous materials such as tree bark and rags, beating them to a pulpy substance and adding water.  After the water was sifted out the remaining mat of "paper" fibers then dried into a sheet of paper.
